According to a Teletext survey, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the second most likely fiction book for people to start, but not finish. It came second to Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre.

Apparently, 32% of people who bought or borrowed Goblet of Fire never finished it, which is a bit of a shame, because it’s my favourite book, and doesn’t bode well for those trying Order of the Phoenix, because even I found that hard going in places.

There’s some far more hard-going contenders on the list, GoF is an easy read compared to many of them:

  1. Vernon God Little, DBC Pierre
  2. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, JK Rowling
  3. Ulysses, James Joyce
  4. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, Louis De Bernieres
  5. Cloud Atlas, David Mitchell
  6. The Satanic Verses, Salman Rushdie
  7. The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho
  8. War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy
  9. The God of Small Things, Arundhati Roy
  10. Crime and Punishment, Fyodor Dostoevsky
