Sales of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows have broken records. The books sold roughly 2.7 million in the UK and 8.3 million in the US in it’s first 24 hours. Asda reported that 97% of its initial batch of 500,000 were sold on Saturday, with 250,000 sold before 9am. WHSmith announced it was selling 15 every second and Waterstones said they had sold 350,000 copies in the first 24 hours. That was a whopping 35% increase of first-day sales in the UK of the last book.

The previous record for first day sales was held by the Half-Blood Prince, with 9 million. Considering the initial print run in the US was 12 million, it means they sold nearly 70% of the print run in the first 24 hours.

As a side note. Let’s assume JK makes £2 per book, that’s £22 million in the bank in the first 24 hours in two countries (it was released in 90). I can see why they told her note to give up her job as children’s authors don’t make any money, who could live on a paltry £22 mil?
